Welcome to Hungry for Happy!

I’m Anna. I enjoy cats, being active, traveling, wine, and eating (not necessarily in that order, but maybe). I have always loved pushing myself to find new ways to stay fit, and learning how others stay in shape. I also know that for me to be happy, I have to always have a challenge or goal in my sights. Plus I enjoy taking lots of pictures of myself (just kidding. Sort of).

My Journey to Health

…continues every day. For part of my junior year of college, I studied abroad in Prague, Czech Republic for four glorious months. It was an unforgettable experience, and I learned a lot about myself in a short amount of time. A few of the most significant things I learned, however, were that you cannot drink beer, cannot not exercise, and that you can survive on a diet that consists of fried cheese, Nutella, beer, and cheese (<– did I already say that? Really, that’s all I ate), but you will definitely seeing changes in your body and health.

Specifically, your butt gets big. And I think your boobs literally fill with cheese. And your once-complimented-cheekbones go into hibernation under a few layers of insulation (it was winter and snowing, like, every day over there though. We’ll cut them some slack.)

So like many college students, I gained weight. Quite a bit. And I felt terrible, physically and emotionally. When I came back from Prague, I knew it was time to turn things around.

With the help of my always-supportive (then) boyfriend, my family, and many doses of tough love, I educated myself on healthy eating, learned how to cook (well, I’m still continuing to learn), worked my butt off (literally), and was reminded of how much I loved being active. I gained confidence in my physical appearance, and also in my ability to set and achieve goals.

One of my proudest moments was running my first half marathon (in fact, my first race ever) in a time I never thought would be attainable to me. Then, at the year and a half point, I was finally down 25 pounds and in the best shape of my life (you may read more about my weight loss here).

I have maintained my weight loss, and my passion for healthy living continues to grow. I love exercising, I love the challenge that comes with deciding what to fuel my body with every time I eat  (<–and it’s definitely a challenge picking the healthier options sometimes), and I especially love the emotional benefits that come along with treating yourself right.

That being said, I wholeheartedly believe the saying “everything in moderation,” (…including moderation) and am not one to deny myself treats on a daily basis. I am certainly not the perfect picture of health, but I know that at least striving for health every day plays a huge factor in my overall happiness.

Background

I graduated from NC State University with a degree in Fashion and Textile Management, which I am doing absolutely nothing with (does anyone really use their degree? It sounded fun when I was 17 and deciding what I was going to do for the rest of my life…).

Currently, I work full-time at a software company in North Carolina. I live with my husband, Joseph, and our fur-children, Willoughby K. Jenkins (BB) and Winkleton McWiggletail (Winks, or WiWi).
